A Silicon Beach-based medical apparel ecommerce startup is cleaning up the industry with new bacteria-fighting scrubs, an overhaul on the fashion side and a financial model that benefits victims of human trafficking.
A study by The Journal of Hospital Infection found that 92% of nurse uniforms carry MRSA, Vancomycin-resistant enterococci or C.difficile bacteria after a single work shift.
With the risk of cross-contamination to patients, family and the community (e.g. the nurse standing in line next to you at Starbucks), one doctor decided it was high time the medical apparel industry clean up its act.
Dr. Neela Sethi Young thus founded the e-commerce company, Jaanuu, with her brother, private equity investor Shaan Sethi.
Scrubs Attract Big Investors
Attracting investors such as billionaire Ron Burkle, Boston Consulting Group Digital Ventures Founder Sean Collins, world renowned angel investor Rick Marini and advisors such as NastyGal former President Deborah Benton and BAM Ventures Managing Partner Rich Jun, the Sethis developed a proprietary, eco-friendly four-fabric blend comparable to Under Armour and Lululemon, to be moisture-wicking, stretch- and wrinkle-resistant – already a huge improvement from the basic cotton most traditional scrubs are made of – then treated the fabric with an antimicrobial solution called SILVADUR produced by Dow Chemical that reduces the spread of bacteria and keeps the products smelling and looking better longer.
But they didn’t stop there. Aiming to create a new line of scrubs that look good, feel good and do good, they assembled a team to create fashionable new apparel with a pay-it-forward model benefitting Runway 2 Remedy, a social initiative providing medicine to child victims of sex trafficking).
Fashion Savvy and High Tech Scrubs
Combining high fashion and high tech medical apparel design, Jaanuu achieves a contemporary look while enhancing functionality. The pants feature denim-inspired pockets and stitching, while the tops have tasteful embellishments like topstitching or accent zippers. The company will continue to introduce new designs at regular intervals. Sales per year are $3million to $5 million. o
Jaanuu is comprised of a highly skilled team of designers, production managers and software developers who have trained, invested in or worked with industry leading companies including Lululemon, Bisou Bisou, Skechers, American Eagle Outfitters, Quiksilver and DSW.
